Music
Welcome to the Scandia music room! Students at Scandia come to music class twice weekly for thirty minutes. Children participate in a variety of musical experiences including singing, playing instruments, playing singing games, moving to music, chanting, listening, improvising, creating and performing. Primary sources of music education include music from many cultures and countries, as well as the great art music of the world. Scandia has a wide variety of Orff instruments, percussion instruments and ethnic instruments available for student music-making. Children also experience music in an integrated arts approach with the use of quality children's literature, such as poetry, folk tales, and award-winning stories. Music education is vital to the education of the whole child. The Forest Lake School District has a well-sequenced curriculum of music education. A committee of music teachers strives to keep the curriculum current and comprehensive as well as consistent from school to school. Fundamentals of music are taught and assessed in the music room while students simultaneously enjoy the rewards of making beautiful music. A primary goal is that each child's experience in the music room will lead to a lifetime of music making and music appreciation. Band, Orchestra, and Choir are options for students in sixth grade. Students participte in weekly individual or small group lessons as well as large group sessions. Their dedication to practice and focus on their lessons really becomes apparent when they perform in the spring.
